Easy Guide for Building a Baby Crib

If you’re the DIY type of person who enjoys building various pieces of furniture, then the fact that you will soon become a parent has probably made you eager to build a crib for the small one. After all, there’s no greater satisfaction than seeing your small bundle of joy sleep and grow in the crib that you have made. If you want to learn how to build a baby crib, continue to read this easy guide and follow the steps given in the following lines.

Supplies that you need to build the baby crib

As any DIY project, building a crib requires you to be prepared with a list of materials prior to beginning the actual work. For this project, you need 3″ screws, 1 1/2″ screws, 3 1/2″ screws, one 2″x2″x10′ pine board, two 4″x4″x8′ pine boards, two 2″x4″x10′ pine boards, four 1″x6″x10′ pine boards, seven 1″x3″x10′ pine boards, eight 1″x2″x10′ pine boards, finish nails, wood glue, a pack of metal “L” brackets. The finish supplies that you must purchase are wood filler, steel wool, 220grit sand paper, and orbit sander. Also, a router table will come in handy for this project when you will shape the pine boards. If you don’t already have one and you plan on doing other woodworking projects in the future, we recommend that you invest in a router table because it will ease your work considerably.

How to build the baby crib

Now that you have gathered all the supplies, it’s time to get to work. Start with the sides of the crib. Cut five 1″x6″ boards to 36 1/2″ in length, and four 1″x3″ boards to 26 3/4″ in length. The next step is to lay the 1″x6″ boards side by side, and attach two 1″x3″ boards across the top and the bottom part. Use glue, clamps, and finish nails to attach them. Afterward, flip the boards over and attach the other two 1″x3″ boards with glue, clamps, and 1 1/2″ screws. Also, you can add decorative 1″x3″ boards as its shown in the picture above.

Next, cut two 1″x3″ boards to 53″ in length. Place vertical slats on the two boards at 2 3/8″ apart from each other. When you’re placing the two outer slats and the crib size, go with a distance that is shorter than 2 3/8″. In order to attach them, use wood glue and 1 1/2″ screws. Next, cut two 2″x4″ board to 53″ in length, and attach them to the bottom using 3″ screws, clamps, and wood glue. After this, cut the 1″x2″ runner to 53″ in length, and attach it to the top with wood glue and finish nails.

Cut the 4″x4″ posts to 43″ in length. Attach them to the sides with wood glue and 3 1/2″ screws. Next, cut the 2″x4″ caps to 37 3/4″ in length and attach them to the posts using wood glue and 3″ screws. Afterward, use wood glue and screws to attach the mattress support into the posts from below at the height that you desire. Once you’re done with this step and everything is in its rightful place, you can admire your masterpiece – the DIY crib that you have made for your child.
